Radisson RED London Heathrow adopts Cistermiser sensor technology to significantly reduce water usage by 84% in washroom urinals, while reducing carbon emissions
The Background:
Radisson RED London Heathrow is a prestigious 258-room, 5-storey hotel, with an emphasis on modern design and technology. This busy hotel welcomes a staggering 230,000* guests per year for both business and leisure. As Radisson RED work towards the science-based net zero target by 2050, identifying relevant technologies to support this goal will feed into the overall Radisson Hotel Groups “Think Planet Strategy”.
The Challenge:
Radisson RED had identified a need to reduce their water consumption within a specific area of the hotel; the Aviator urinal communal washroom. The existing 10x aged urinals had no form of attenuation on them, resulting in frequent cistern flushing throughout the day. Radisson RED consulted SaveMoneyCutCarbon to help them understand the various technology options available and the impact this would have on the hotel.
The Solution:
SaveMoneyCutCarbon identified the Cistermiser Direct Flush Discreet (DFD) urinal valve as the optimum solution, as they have been specifically engineered to ensure both water and energy efficiencies are maximised, while offering an attractive payback in as little as 8 months. The Cistermiser infrared sensor-controlled DFD is an automatic mains-flushing valve that is activated once the urinal is used which ensures the highest level of hygiene is achieved from using minimal volumes of water.
To help Radisson RED realise the full benefits of the DFD sensor solution and the positive impact this solution could offer the hotel, an initial trial methodology of the solution was arranged. A chief engineer, at Radisson RED carried out an A/B test – water meters were installed onto two sets of urinals for a period of one month. Set A was converted with the Cistermiser DFD smart water-saving solution, while Set B remained the control. This enabled SaveMoneyCutCarbon to present an unbiased water saving analysis, as well as presenting comparative data of the new sensor solution against the existing urinal system.
The Outcome:
Radisson RED have been delighted with the incredible 84% water-savings, which were achieved by installing the trial of Cistermiser DFD’s, and following further evaluation of the analysis, Radisson RED have commissioned to fully retrofit the communal Aviator urinal washroom with a further 8x DFD’s and in addition they have also decided to retrofit a second communal washroom Orbiter with the same water-saving solution, by doing so Radisson RED are also reducing in their carbon footprint.
Client Testimonials:
“The month-long trial at the Radisson Red Heathrow clearly showed the benefits of the Cistermiser system and achieved the savings that we were promised – an impressive 84% reduction in water used by the urinals. A key goal of Radisson Hotel Group’s Think Planet strategy is to reduce our overall energy consumption significantly and I believe that this technology will assist with this. While water is not our biggest challenge as we move towards the science-based net zero target in 2050, reducing consumption through these types of technologies will play a big part in developing our carbon-neutral footprint.”
Simon Pearson – Area Chief Engineer, UK and Ireland at Radisson Hotel Group
“We are very pleased to have helped Radisson reduce their urinal water usage with the sensor technology that puts the hotel back in control. It goes to show that old urinal systems are very inefficient and there is scope to reduce most of the water used without compromising on performance.”
