Washroom Control
How the Washroom Control System operates
The Cistermiser Washroom Control has been designed as a simple yet effective management system for controlling all primary services within the
washroom. Occupancy is constantly monitored by up to 10 PIR sensor strategically placed throughout the washroom. This ensures that the washroom
services are activated while facilities are required and remain inactive while they are not.
When someone enters the washroom all services controlled by the Washroom Control unit are activated; the hot and cold water solenoids open,
lighting is switched on (if necessary), the extract-fans start turning and the internal timers begin counting. Every service system in the washroom is set
to run for a fixed time or 'service cycle' which is activated by the timer being set to zero. As long as the washroom is occupied the PIR sensor signals
will continue to be interupted which re-sets all timers to zero and maintains the system in operating mode.
When the washroom becomes unoccupied the PIR sensor signals are no longer interrupted the timers are not re-started, the Washroom Control sends
no further output signals so the washroom services complete their service cycles and shut down (see table below).
If no movement is detected for 24 hours the cold water solenoid automatically opens for 30 minutes to activate a 'hygiene' flush through the urinals
which prevents washroom odours.
Application and Installation
The Washroom Control provides the benefits of
a Building Management System (BMS) within
the discrete environment of the washroom.
Each Washroom Control system requires a
master control unit connected to a 240v mains
supply, a number of PIR sensor units (generally
at least 3 or 4) which are either surface or flush
mounted on the wall or ceiling and solenoid
valves of the appropriate size plumbed into the
hot and cold water supply. The unit controls
services within a defined area, which can be a
single toilet facility or several adjacent facilities.
Ease of installation makes the Washroom
Control suitable for existing premises as well as
new buildings. All systems contain a urinal flush
control unit to comply with the Water
Regulations.
The system includes a 'key switch' to provide
manual over-ride during maintenance work.
Benefits
The Cistermiser Washroom Control system
ensures that the full range of washroom utility
services is available on demand but shut down
when the washroom is not in use. This
automatic shut-down process eliminates the
costs of unnecessary lighting and hot and cold
water loss caused by open taps and leaking
valves. It also significantly reduces the risk of
flood damage and vandalism and the high
costs asssociated with them.
PIR Sensors - detecting
occupancy and monitoring
light levels
The PIR (person in room) sensors units are
normally positioned in the ceiling. They have
two functions; to transmit a regular signal to the
Washroom Control unit and to compare
ambient light level with an adjustable threshold.
Detection of body movement interrupts the PIR
sensor signals, indicating that the washroom is
occupied and activating the washroom services
as previously described.
The light level monitoring function ensures that
electric lighting is only used when natural light
levels are insufficient.

Notes:
- Timer accuracy +/- 5%.
- If the controlled output load to any service exceeds
the maximum stated the Washroom Control should
be connected to a suitable contactor which will
regulate the power supply to the unit.
